Role of Gender and Other Factors on Health Perceptions of Nursing Students
Öz: Objective: This descriptive study was aimed to assess health perceptions of nursing students, and determine the factors affecting these perceptions. Material and Methods: After obtaining the necessary permissions from the related institutions, this study was done between September 2015-October 2015. The universe of the study involves 3rd and 4th grade undergraduate nursing students in city of Sakarya, and the sample of the study is 131 students, who accepted to participate in the study. Kruskal Wallis and the Mann-Whitney U tests were used, and a p-value <0.05 was considered significant. Results: The mean age of the participants was 21.21±1.68, and 52.7 percent were female. Majority of the participants (69.5%; n=91) noted that they have an “average” economic status, and it was found that majority of them live in city center (52.7%; n=69). Moreover, participants noted that their mothers and fathers were elementary school graduates (respectively, 78.6% and 51.9%). Health Perception Score (HPS) was found to be 49.29±6.75 for male students, whereas it was found to be 50.42±5.83 for female students. As a result, there was not a statistically significant difference between HPS score and sub scale scores according to gender (p>0.05). Conclusion: It was found that the HPS mean scores of male and female students were both similar to each other, and satisfactory. Moreover, health perceptions of the students did not show significant differences according to gender (p>0.05).
