Removing of SARS-CoV-2 from Water and Wastewater with Membrane Technologies-A Brief Review

Öz:
In the last century, the world has faced many factors that cause pandemics. There havebeen three major epidemics caused by coronaviruses in the last 17 years. World HealthOrganization (WHO) announced on March 11 2020 that the most recent outbreak, SARS-CoV2, turned from epidemic to global pandemic. Although the fact that the major transmission routesof SARS-CoV-2 are inhalation of aerosol/droplet and person-to-person contact, availableevidence indicates the viral RNA existence in wastewater. This situation brings out the need fora better understanding of wastewater amongst other human health risks factors. The aim of thisarticle is to review the available knowledge related to SARS-CoV-2 and its presence inwastewater/water, usage of membrane technologies for the removal of SARS-CoV-2 inwastewater/water, and effect of SARS-CoV-2 on public health. Although currently availabledatas are limited for removal of SARS-CoV-2 with purification techniques, membranetechnologies can be a potential candidate for reducing the impact of the ongoing COVID-19outbreak.
