Objective: The purpose of this study is; to adapt the Sport Engagement Instrument (SpEI) for student athletes into Turkish, which was developed by Kuokkanen et al. (2020) to measure the commitment to sports of individuals trying to pursue an academic career in addition to their sports career. Material and Methods: A total of 492 volunteer student athletes, 179 female and 313 male, with an average age of 21.05 (±2.9), participated in this research. The original version of the SpEI consists of 18 items in 6 sub-dimensions that are rated on a 5-point Likert scale. These sub-dimen- sions consist of “Maternal Support for Sport” (3 items), “Paternal Support for Sport” (3 items), “Coach-Athlete Relationships” (3 items), “Peer Support for Sport” (3 items), “Control and Relevance of Sports” (3 items) and “Fu- ture Goals and Aspirations” (3 items). In order to collect data with the scale, it needs to be translated into Turkish. At this point, in the light of the sug- gestions of Beaton, Bombardier, Guillemin, and Ferraz (2000), the cross-cul- tural adaptation (back-translation) method, which is frequently used in scale adaptations, was used. In addition, to test the normality assumption of the data, the skewness-kurtosis coefficients (-1.093 and .394) were checked. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to test the scale’s construct validity, and then Cronbach alpha values were calculated for in- ternal consistency. Results: CFA results showed that: the chi-square (x2/sd) value is 2.99; goodness of fit index 0.92; incremental fit index 0.94; Tucker- Lewis index 0.92; comparative fit index of 0.94; the root mean square error of approximation 0.064 and p-value 0.000. In addition, internal consistency values were between 0.66 (Future Goals and Aspirations) and 0.85 (coach- athlete relationships). Conclusion: In conclusion the validity and reliability of SpEI were supported and it could be used by the relevant researchers.
