COMPARISON OF TWO DIFFERENT DECOMPRESSION MODALITIES AS THE INITIAL TREATMENT OF DENTIGEROUS CYSTS IN CHILDREN WITH MIXED DENTITION

Öz:
Background and Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of acrylic resin obturator and tube drain in decompression of dentigerous cysts with regards to reduction parameters and decompression time. Materials and Methods: All consecutive dentigerous cysts occurring in children with mixed dentition and treated by decompression using either acrylic resin obturator or tube drain from 2015 to 2020 at our department were included in the present study. Data regarding age, gender, location of the lesion, method and duration of decompression, pre- and post-treatment lesion size and eruption of related tooth after decompression were recorded. The standard lesion area index (SLAI), the percentage of reduction of the lesion area (POR), decompression time and reduction rate (RR) were calculated and statistical analysis was performed. Results: Twenty-one lesions were treated with tube drains while acrylic resin obturators were used in 18 lesions. The mean SLAIs were 12.89 cm2 and 13.14 cm2 before decompression and 2.78 cm2 and 3.13cm2 after decompression at the acrylic resin obturator and tube drain groups, respectively. The mean POR after decompression was 77.62% and 77.22% for the acrylic resin obturator and tube drain groups, respectively. The mean decompression time was 6.5 months for both groups. The RR was also similar in the acrylic obturator (6.08) and tube drain groups (5.00). No significant difference was found between two groups in terms of POR, decompression time and RR (p>.05). Conclusion: Initial treatment of dentigerous cysts in children with mixed dentition can be accomplished effectively with decompression using both techniques.
