TEOS’TAN BÜST TAÇLI BİR KADIN PORTRESİ (CLAUDIA METRODORA?)

TEOS’TAN BÜST TAÇLI BİR KADIN PORTRESİ (CLAUDIA METRODORA?)
Öz: Bu makale Teos antik kentinde 2021 yılı kazı çalışmalarında meclis binasının (bouleuterion) güney duva- rına teğet kuzeybatı-güneydoğu doğrultulu cadde döşemesi üzerinde bulunan büst taçlı bir kadın portresini ele almaktadır. Boyundan kırık portrenin ait olduğu torso kazı çalışmalarında ele geçmemiştir. Beyaz mermer- den yapılmış normal insan ölçülerindeki kadın portresi, başında defne tacı ve defne tacına bağlı bir levha üzerinde üç adet büst taşımaktadır. Ancak çok tahrip olan taçtaki büstlerin kimleri temsil ettiği kesin olarak belirlenememiştir. Taçtaki büstlerin bilinçli bir şekilde tahrip edilmiş olmaları ve herhangi bir tanrıyla ilişki- lendirilebilecek belirteçlere sahip olmamaları, büstlerin belirli tanrı ya da yönetimdeki imparatorluk ailesiyle bağlantısını çözümsüz bırakmaktadır. Caddenin devamında yapılacak olan kazı çalışmalarında bulunacak bu portreye ait olası parçalar ile yazıt, belki ileride portrenin daha iyi yorumlanmasına katkı sağlayacaktır. Büstlü taç taşıyan söz konusu bu portre, Asia Birliği Başrahibesi (Tanrıça Roma ve Augustus Kültü), Dionysos Kültü Başrahibesi, stephanephoros ya da bir agonothetes ile ilişkilendirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Stilistik açıdan MS 1. yüzyılın 3. çeyreğine tarihlenen (MS 50-70) kadın portresinin büstlü kadın portreleri içerisinde en erken örnek olduğu ileri sürülmüştür. Khios ile Ephesos’ta yapmış olduğu hizmetlerden dolayı zamanında iyi tanınan ve dört kuşak boyunca takip edilebilen Tiberii Claudii sülalesinin adı bilinen ilk kadın ferdi Tiberius Claudius Kalob- rotos’un kızı Claudia Metrodora ya da Tiberius Claudius Kalobrotos’un gelini Asia Birliği Başrahibesi Strato- neike olabileceği bu çalışmada önerilmiştir.

Öz: The subject of this article is a life-sized marble female portrait with a bust-crown, which was dis- covered during the 2021 excavations on the Northwest-Southeast aligned marble street tangent to the South wall of the Council House (Bouleuterion) in the ancient city of Teos. The corresponding torso belonging to the portrait head with broken neck was not found during these excavations. The crown bears a laurel wreath with three busts in relief attached to a rectangular plate in the center of the diadem. Since the busts on the crown have no attributes and are intentionally very badly damaged, they could not be associated with specific deities or with the members of the imperial household. As a result, it is not possible to determine exactly whom the busts on the crown represent. Additional fragments of the portrait statue and an accompanying inscription that might possibly turn up in the future excavations, would probably contribute to a better in- terpretation of the portrait. The portrait head, which is stylistically dated to the third quarter of the first century CE (50-70 CE), is the earliest example of a female portrait with a bust-crown. Moreover, even in its present condition, it is possible to narrow down the scope of the possible attributions of this portrait, inclu- ding the significant details of the bust-crown. The head likely represents one of the following: the High Priestess of the Province of Asia (and by extension, the cult of Roma and Augustus); the High Priestess of the Dionysus-Cult; a stephanephoros; or an agonothetes. In this study, it has further been suggested that the port- rait either represents Claudia Metrodora, the daughter of Tiberius Claudius Kalobrotos and the first known female member of the well-known Tiberii Claudii family of four subsequent generations, honored for her services in Ephesus and Chios, or that it depicts Stratoneike, the High Priestess of the province of Asia and the bride of Tiberius Claudius Kalobrotos.
