Fall injuries in the elderly people as a public health problem

Öz:
Fall injuries might be seen in any age group and it is an important public health problem especially in the elderly people and children. Falls might cause serious injuries, fractures, head traumas and in severe cases it might result in mortality. The diagnostic and therapeutic workup after fall injuries may significantly contribute to the workload of healthcare workers and also have a negative economic impact. There are plenty of studies and articles on fall injuries in the elderly people in the medical literature. There are also many guidelines and educational activities for the prevention of the fall injuries in countries with high elderly population. As a result of the expected increase in the median age of the Turkish population, falls in elderly will be an important issue in the future. This article reviews the falls in elderly and emphasizes the preventable aspect of this public health problem.
