TY - JOUR TI - Attitudes and Views of Teachers on Multicultural Education: Example of Social Studies Lesson AB - The aim of this study is to evaluate the attitudes and views of social studies and primary school teachers about multicultural education as they are mainly in charge of teaching social studies in elementary education. It was designed as a mixed-method model combining quantitative and qualitative research methods. The research pattern was explanatory sequential mixed-method design since quantitative data collection was applied as the primary method and then qualitative data were used to back up the quantitative data. The study group consisted of social studies and primary school teachers working in Erzurum, a medium-size city in the central northeast of Turkey. Quantitative data were collected through the "Teachers' Multicultural Education Attitude Scale" and qualitative data were collected with the "Semi-Structured Interview Form" developed by the researcher. The quantitative data were analyzed through t Test, One-Way Analysis of Variance and Kruskal-Wallis-H Test, while descriptive analysis technique was performed to analyze the qualitative data. As a result of the quantitative analysis, the teachers were found to predominantly have positive views on multicultural education. As for the qualitative results, the teachers were seen to have various prejudices and deficient knowledge about multicultural education. In light of the findings, it is recommended to write educational content to increase teachers' awareness of multicultural education.
