UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS ON STUDYING ABROAD BASED ON PUSH-PULL THEORY

Öz:
With the expansion of internationalization in higher education, there has been an increase in the tendency of university students to study abroad. Students study abroad to learn about cultures in different countries, develop foreign language skills, and learn to live in multicultural environments as well as gaining a new academic experience in different universities. However, it is also known that the experience of studying in a different country brings various challenges to students. From this point of view, this qualitative study examined the factors that push and pull university students to study abroad and their perceptions about the possible challenges of this education. In this context, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 students studying at a state university in Ankara, Türkiye during the first weeks of their university education. As a result of the study, it was found that all students who participated in the study had positive views about studying abroad, but they preferred short-term programs rather than long- term programs. Students who preferred physical mobility more than virtual mobility stated that they would like to return to Türkiye after their education abroad. Moreover, students expressed various academic, economic, political and socio- cultural challenges that concern them about studying abroad. Finally, it was observed that the pulling factors to study abroad were more prominent than the push factors related to education in Türkiye.
