Spina bifda and rehabilitation

Öz:
Spina bifda (SB) is the incomplete closure of the posterior elements ofthe vertebrae due to a developmental disorder. Among the causes ofchildhood disability, SB is the second most common cause after cerebralpalsy. Generally, secondary motor neuron fndings are seen below thelesion. The ambulation grade and the orthoses used by patients varyaccording to the level of the lesion. SB patients experience variouscomplications throughout their lives. The purpose of SB rehabilitationis to prevent these complications and to keep the patient s functionalstatus at the best possible level. Therefore, a rehabilitation program, starting at infancy and continuing during the lifetime, should be familycentered and should be conducted with a multidisciplinary team.
