The Effects of Parental Control on Students Perceptions of Smoking

Öz:
Aim: To examine the effects of parental control perceived by sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade elementary school students on their perceptions of smoking. Methods: The study sample comprised 514 sixth-, seventh- and eighthgrade students. Data were collected by the Child Decision Balance Scale and Parent Monitoring Scale Adolescent Form. Mean value, percentage calculations, Kruskal Wallis analysis, t-test in corrected independent groups for advanced analysis and corrected Mann-Whitney U test were used in the evaluation of the data. Results: A statistically signifi cant difference was detected between the mean scores of the students (p<0.05) in the smoking benefi t perceptions according to the status of perceiving the parental attitude interest, low-interest and non-interest. Likewise, statistically signifi cant differences were found between the students mean scores of smoking benefi t perceptions in the school monitoring subdimension of parental control, in the health monitoring subdimension of smoking risk perceptions, and in the restrictive monitoring subdimension of smoking benefi t perceptions (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that smoking benefi t perceptions of the children with highly perceived parental control were low while their smoking risk perceptions were high.
