Bretton Woods is identified with the approval of the new international monetary order characterised by fixed exchange system. Now the world monetary edifice rests mainly on the US Dollar. Bretton Woods could be interpreted as a thereshold for the Fordist accumulation regime and the practice of the Keynesian capitalism at global level. The rapid capital acccumulation and economic growth have contributed to the preponderance of the welfare regimes. The domestic and external factors play a multifold role in designing different welfare regimes in the core economies. Nevertheless imperialism and new colonialism are the main features of the Fordist period as well as the US began to dominate the capitalist world as the hegemonic state. In the periphery "bloody Taylorism" and "peripheral Fordism" are the dominant accumulation regimes and a minimum welfare state has been adopted in a group of semi-peripheral countries. The collapse of the Bretton Woods system in the early 1970s, the great stagflation during the decade and the failure of the Keynesian policy prescriptions to cure the stagflation are the signals/indicators of the changing economic and financial context and the end of Fordism as well as the transition to post-Fordism and neoliberalism.
