KARYA'DAKİ GEÇ ANTİK VE BİZANS DÖNEMİ YAPI VE YERLEŞİMLERİ ÜZERİNE BAZI GÖZLEMLER

Öz:

Bu çalışma Batı Anadolu'nun Karya bölgesindeki Geç Antik ve Bizans dönemi yapı ve yerleşim alanlarını, tarih, arkeoloji ve sanat tarihi açısından ele alan ve henüz devam etmekte olan bir araştırmaya dair bazı ön gözlemler sunmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu araştırma, uzun dönemli ve geniş kapsamlı 'Mandalya Körfezi Arkeolojik Yüzey Araştırması Projesi'nin bir parçası olup, 2003-2011 yılları arasında Mandalya Körfezi'nde yapılan arazi çalışmalarından elde edilen verilere dayanmaktadır (Resim 1)(1). Bu araştırma kapsamında Mandalya Körfezi'nde söz konusu dönemlerdeki yapı ve yerleşim türleri, bu yapı ve yerleşimlerin bölgedeki konum ve dağılımı ve bu dağılımı etkileyen faktörler incelenmekte ve ayrıca bu yerleşim birimlerinin hem çevrelerindeki kırsal alanlarla hem de bölgedeki başlıca iki antik kent olan Iasos (bugünkü Kıyıkışlacık) ve Bargylia ile olan ilişki ve etkileşimleri irdelenmektedir. Hem yazılı kaynakların hem arkeolojik verilerin ışığında 'bütüncül' bir yaklaşımla, Roma döneminden Ortaçağ'a geçiş sürecindeki dini, sosyal, ekonomik ve kültürel değişimlere bağlı olarak Karya'nın Geç Antik ve Bizans dönemleri boyunca tarihi topoğrafyasına ışık tutmayı amaçlayan bu geniş kapsamlı araştırmanın bazı bulgularına bu makalede değinilecektir.

SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE LATE ANTIQUE AND BYZANTINE MONUMENTS, SITES, AND SETTLEMENTS IN CARIA

Öz:

The present research, which is part of a larger, long-term project entitled the 'Archaeological Survey of the Gulf of Mandalya, Caria', aims to document and interpret the Late Antique and Byzantine monuments and topography of Caria (5th-13th c. AD) and covers the results of nine years of fieldwork (2003-2011). In antiquity the survey-area largely remained under the jurisdiction of Iasos (mod. Kıyıkışlacık) - the major extinct city in the area - giving its name to the entire territory. This work investigates the types of buildings, sites, and settlements identified in the survey-area, their distribution across the landscape and the possible factors influencing this distribution, as well as their association with the major ancient cities in the area, namely Iasos and Bargylia. In this context, emphasis is placed on the identification and interpretation of different types of rural settlements (e.g., villages, habitats, agricultural establishments) in terms of land use and management. This research adopts the theories and methods of a holistic approach and attempts to understand the development of settlement patterns in association with the social, economic, religious, and cultural context of that period of transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages. With this premise, this study intends to offer recent archeological data for a better understanding of the urban territoria and countryside of ancient Caria.
