Although Turkey has a rich historical and culturalheritage, these values have not attracted necessaryattention due to lack of conservative awareness. Inrecent years, the efforts of both non-governmentalorganizations, and academics who haveconservative awareness, have contributed to theincrease of this awareness. The region called as“Sur İçi” in Diyarbakır, which entered theUNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2015, is one ofthe rare historical urban areas that still remaintoday with its historic fabric formed by inns, baths, churches, mosques and houses. Despite thedevastation that took place in the city in the lastyear, the early starting of the preservation processof architectural heritage has led documentation ofmany aspects and the creation of a ConservationOrientedDevelopment Plan.Diyarbakır House purchased by DiyarbakırChamber of Architects has been a pioneer in theprotection of cultural heritage through a restorationand functioning that constitutes a model. After therestoration, the use of the structure by “dengbejs”,who sing the regional song without instrument, isalso precious in terms of preserving the culturefacing extinction and recognition of this culture bynew generations. The structure, defined asDiyarbakır Chamber of Architects’ or Dengbej’sHouse, is in Diyarbakır urban protected area andconsists of a total of 3-storey, basement, ground andfirst floor. It is thought that it could have been builtin the second half of the 19th century, although thereis no information about the date of construction. The building has a U-form plan scheme. Like othertraditional houses, it is an attached building and hasa single-entry. There is an iwan with two cubbyholesand single pillar in the south of the courtyard,a pool in its northeast and an original kitchen in itswest. Windows are round and with cusped arch. Thepresence of the bay window, which didn’t remaintoday, at the front street of the building can beunderstood from the stone console located on thewall. Straight rooftop with concrete was then builtfor the building which initially had soil rooftop. Thestone consoles bearing wooden eaves under the roofretain their original shape and location. The restoration process was carried out graduallywith emphasis on local materials and technique inDiyarbakir Chamber of Architects’ House. In thefirst phase of the restoration, the principle that thebuilding is a whole with the periphery has beenadopted and it has been decided that the structureshould be purified from the unqualified joints. Theattachment, which ruins the original character of thecourtyard in the northeastern corner of the building, was removed. In the second phase, the elementsadded later that were not in the original format wasremoved. These are party walls built at the basementfloor, the toilet behind the street gate and theentrance with briquette wall built to the iwan wallthat provides the entrance to the kitchen overlookingthe courtyard. The places and the elements identifiedfrom the traces in the building was completed orreconstructed in the third phase. The bay windowlocated at the street front whose existence isunderstood from the stone console on the wall butdidn’t remain today and the elliptical pool in thewest of the courtyard were completed as a matter ofthis principle. The fourth phase is adding theelements which are not present in the structure butmust be found because of the necessity of use. At thisstage, the staircase, which provides access to thereinforced concrete structure constructed later inthe north, was rebuilt. Toilets were also constructedunder the stairs. In this study, the restoration process of DiyarbakırHouse located in Sur İçi region purchased byDiyarbakır Chamber of Architects and havingtraditional characteristics, and its functioning stageshave been explained. Diyarbakır Chamber ofArchitects included Faculty of Architecture of DicleUniversity in the restoration process andcontributed to the creation of a product thatcommon points has converted into social utility interms of protection.
