Effects of methyl jasmonate on pre and postharvest physiology of vegetables

Öz:
Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) methyl ester of jasmonic acid (JA) is known to be used maintain quality and long term storage due to physiological effects before and after harvest on vegetables. MeJA is available within the plant and found in different amounts in different tissues of the plant. Although MeJA is known as endogenous hormone, it can be used as exogenous treatment in the form of both solution and gas. MeJA is reported to prevents seed germination and root development, delays flowering in long day plants, accelerates the chlorophyll degradation, inhibits proteinase enzyme activity, increases aromatic compounds and anthocyanins, prevents disease and pest development in vegetable species. Significant quality losses occur due to fungal pathogens in vegetables after harvest. Synthetic chemical fungicides are used commonly against fungal pathogens. However, due to residue and pathogen resistance against fungicides so alternative solutions are required. Therefore MeJA are thought to increase the natural defense mechanisms of plants for control disease. By means of exogenous treatment of MeJA, secondary metabolites are induced in plant cell, generating gene defense mechanism and enhance resistance against to settled pathogens. Determination of postharvest efficacy of MeJA, in reduction of browning and chilling injury, inhibiting weight loss, discolorage, sprouting and rooting and maintainance of aromatic compounds during vegetable storage, it is believed that MeJA treatment will be widespread to maintain chemical and visual quality. In this study, researches about the effects of methyl jasmonate on pre and postharvest physiology of vegetables were reviewed.
