THE SUCCESS OF LOW-COST CARRIERS: THE CASE OF SOUTHWEST AIRLINES AND PEGASUS AIRLINES

Öz:
Küreselleşme, entegrasyon süreçleri ve pazarın değişen ihtiyaçları birçok sanayi sektörünü yeni stratejiler geliştirmeye sevk etmiştir. Bu yeni stratejiler özellikle hava taşımacılığı sektöründe doğrudan bir değişimi beraberinde getirmiştir. Havacılık sektöründeki firmaların birçoğu doksanlı yılların başında Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nde ortaya çıkan "düşük maliyetli taşıyıcı" olarak adlandırılan yeni rekabetçi iş modelini gerçekleştirmeye çalışmışlardır. 'Düşük maliyetli taşıyıcı' modelinin temel özelliği tek yolcu sınıflı ve sadece bir uçak modelinin kullanılmasıdır. Bu makalede, düşük maliyetli stratejiye odaklanan Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nden Southwest Havayolları ile Türkiye'den Pegasus Havayollarına başarılarına ilişkin vaka çalışması yapılmıştır

Öz:
With globalization, integration processes and changing needs of the market, many industries tend to adapt new strategies. These new strategies have direct effect on air transport market. In airline industry, most of air carriers ensure a competitiveness new business model called “low-cost carrier” which originated from United States in the early nineties of last century. The main characteristic of low-cost carrier model is usage of aircraft with single passenger class and operating with only one model of aircraft. This article is based on a case study of low cost strategy and it is particularly focused on success of low- cost carriers Southwest Airline in the United States and Pegasus Airlines in Turkey
