INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PRESERVICE SCIENCE TEACHERS’ ACHIEVEMENT GOAL ORIENTATIONS AND ACADEMIC SELF-EFFICACY WITH STRUCTURAL EQUATION MODEL

Öz:
Achievement goal orientation and self-efficacy are important motivational processes. In recent years, researchers have focused on the relationship between these processes. To determine the relationship between these processes is important to improve student motivation and success. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to investigate relationship preservice science teachers’ achievement goal orientations and academic self-efficacy with using structural model. The sample of the study was comprised of 218 preservice science teachers from the Faculty of Education, Kafkas University. The data obtained from a sample were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) technique. Data collection was done through “Achievement Goal Orientations Scale” and “Academic Self-Efficacy Scale”. Achievement Goal Orientations Scale has three dimentions. These dimentions are mastery goals, performance-approach goals and performance-avoidance goals. The structural model thus has three latent exogenous variables (mastery goals, performance-approach goals and performanceavoidance goals) and one endogenous variable (academic self-efficacy). The structural equation modeling yielded good fit. The findings of the structural model showed that mastery goals have positive relationships with self-efficacy and performance-approach goals and performanceavoidance goals to be unrelated to self-efficacy. Besides, preservice science teachers’ mastery goals explain 11% of the academic selfefficacy. The correlation value obtained from descriptive findings seems to support results of structural model
