Exploring Learning Style and Hemispheric Processing Preferences of Efl Learners

This article presents the results of two inventories that aimed to identify the perceptual learning style and hemispheric processing preferences of adult EFL learners. The specific purposes of this study were to identify the association of learning style preferences (visual, auditory, kinesthetic/tactile) and hemispheric preferences (analytic/global) to such variables as students' prior language education, field of specialization and final language course grades. The sample consisted of 150 adult students receiving intensive foreign language instruction, 82 of which were prospective students of Engineering, 50 of Social Sciences, and 15 of Basic Sciences. The instrument chosen to investigate learning-style preferences was Barsch Learning-Style Inventory, while the Brain-Dominance Inventory was employed to determine each learner's hemispherity. The statistical program used to analyze the inventories was SPSS, using Pearson chi-square statistical technique. The analysis of the inventories indicated that there was no significant difference between those students' diagnosed learning-style preferences and hemispherity and the three variables investigated. The educational implications of these findings are discussed, and suggestions are made on the basis of research findings.
