Emotional regulation and psychological adjustment in adolescence: Turkish Adaptation of the Emotion Regulation Scale

Öz:
Bu çalışmanın amacı Duygu Düzenleme Ölçeğini (Gross ve John, 2003) Türkçeye uyarlamak ve ölçeğin ergenlerin psikososyal gelişim göstergeleriyle ilişkisini incelemektir. Bu doğrultuda, ölçeğin psikometrik özellikleri 13--17 yas lise öğrencileri üzerinde araştırılmıştır. İki farklı lisenin öğrencileri (n 422) ölçeği altı ay arayla iki kez yan1t-- lamıştır. Öğrencilerin anne (n 185), baba (n 173) ve s1n1f öğretmenleri (n 351) ise öğrencilerin psikososyal gelişimlerini, olumlu sosyal davranış, dışsallaştırma ve içselleştirme sorunları açısından ilk ölçüm döneminde değerlendirmiştir. Açıklayıcı ve doğrulayıcı faktör analizleri, cinsiyet değişkeni göz önüne alınarak, kız ve erkek öğrenci örneklemleri için ayrı ayrı karşılaştırmalı olarak yapılmıştır. Sonuçlar, ölçeğin Türkçe uyarlanmasının iki boyutlu ya-- pısını (yeniden değerlendirme ve duygu ifadesinin bastırılması) desteklemiştir. Ölçeğin yapısında cinsiyet farkı gözlenmemiştir. Ergenlerde duygu düzenlemesi ve psikososyal gelişim arasındaki ilişki, yordayıcı analizler uygulanarak incelendiğinde, yeniden değerlendirme boyutunun ebeveynlerin içselleştirme sorunları değerlendirmelerini hem kız hem de erkek öğrencilerde olumsuz yordadığı görülmüştür. lfadenin bastırılması boyutu ise, kızların olumlu sosyal davranışlarına yönelik olan baba değerlendirmelerini olumlu yordamıştır. Diğer yandan, bastırma boyutu babaların erkek çocuklarının dışsallaştırma sorunlarına ilişkin değerlendirmelerini de olumlu yordamıştır. Sonuçlar, duygu düzenlemede kültürel özellikler ve ebeveynlerin duygu sosyalleşmesi üzerindeki etkisi dikkate alınarak tartışılmıştır.

Ergenlikte Duygu Düzenleme ve Psikolojik Uyum: Duygu Düzenleme Ölçeğinin Türkçe Uyarlaması

Öz:
Present study aims to examine psychometric qualities of Gross and John’s (2003) Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), which assesses two personal emotion regulation strategies, reappraisal and expressive suppression, using 13 to 17 years old Turkish adolescents. Students from two different high schools (n 422) rated how frequently they use each strategy twice with an interval of six months. During the first phase, mothers (n 185), fathers (n 185), and class teachers (n 351) rated students’ prosocial behavior, extemalization and internalization problems. Exploratory factor analysis showed that the 10—item scale had clear two—factor structure with acceptable reliabilities for each factor across genders. To examine the consistency between genders, multi—group confirmatory factor analysis was implemented on boys and girls separately. Correlations between the two dimensions of the ERQ and problem behav— iors supported the predictive validity of the measure. On the one hand, reappraisal was associated with internalization problems across samples. On the other hand, suppression correlated positively with father—rated prosocial behavior for girls and externalization problems for boys. The results were discussed considering cultural effects on adolescents’ self-regulation and the roles of parents on development of emotion socialization.
