Actual Methods of Color Measurement: Systematic Review

Öz:
Esthetic success of dental restorations is depend on shade matching with the natural dentition. Shade selection in esthetic dentistry is a challenging and important process due to complex characteristics of the natural teeth. Color determination in dentistry can be divided into two categories as visual and instrumental. Since color perception is influenced by many factors; tooth shade matching using shade guides is highly subjective and inconsistent. To minimize this sub- jectivity spectrophotometer, spectroradiometer, colorimeter and digital image analysing systems were developed. Shade matching devices have advantages that readings are quantifiable, can obtain more rapidly and simply, objective and precise. However translucent structure and irregular sur- faces of teeth leads to inaccuracies in measurements with devices. Also between the results ob- tained by devices with different measurement principles may also be inconsistencies. Complete tooth surface measurement devices gives more succesfull results than limited area measurement devices. However these devices have limitations that high costs, difficult clinical practice and cal- ibration, software update requirements. For that reason the most reliable shade matching is achieved by combining visual method with technologic systems. This review provide knowledge about cur- rent shade selection systems and advances in shade selection.
