TY - JOUR TI - THOMAS MORE’S UTOPIA: A MANUAL FOR EXPANSIONIST FOREIGN POLICY? AB - Thomas More’s Utopia, among others, touches upon the international relationsof the ideal state called Utopia. Theutopian foreign politics depend upon ahierarchical understanding of internationalrelations, where Utopia occupies theuppermost position. This self-righteousand self-serving position enables Utopiato wage aggressive wars and to implementan imperialistic policy. Geographicalexpansion is an important componentof this policy, which is justified by anunquestionable moral superiority of thisstate. Utopians feel free to declare wars, appoint rulers from their ranks for theirallies and usurp other nations’ resources atwill. All this stems from the fact that Utopiahas an unfalsifiable claim of always beingthe rightful party. This paper deals withthis apparently imperialistic and inherentlysupremacist design of Utopian foreignaffairs. Thomas More foresees an orderedstate within domestic realm, whereasregarding foreign affairs he offers a cruelyet rational policymaking geared towardsaggressive wars.
