Compassion and Nursing: Can Compassion be Measured?: Review
Öz: One of the requirements of being virtuous in all of the societies and religions since the beginning of humanity, compassion-defined as the sentiment to take care of others’ pain and misery is an essential, a must-have sentiment in nursing, which is one of the divine occupations in the world. Upon the negative feedbacks about patient satisfaction to the health insurances in the recent years in the international area; compassion and compassionate care concepts have become more important. Compassion, defined but not fully understood, is accepted as a universal perfect component of nursing. In the world, compassionate health care models are being created, and studies about compassionate care scales are being carried out. If the compassionate health care models are used as a routine in the nursing behaviors and applications; compassionate care can easily be applied for the patients. Compassionate care is a care model that provides patient satisfaction which can be considered as an indicator of quality for the hospitals, and that has no financial expenditure, has positive physiological effects on the patient and accelerates recovery. However, in our country, studies on compassionate health care models and a standard scale that measures the compassionate care qualities do not exist. In parallel with the increasing elderly population, increasing cancer cases, increasing rates of staying in intensive care units with the surgical interventions; there will be a need for new compassionate health care models and more qualitative research on compassionate care in order to increase patient satisfaction and decrease the rate of complications. This compilation is thought to create awareness about compassionate care for all health staff members and especially nurses, and to guide towards developing scales in order to evaluate compassionate care suitable for our own society and culture.
