TY - JOUR TI - Xanthos West Agora II: Alteration and Transformation in the Byzantine Period AB - This article deals with the transformation ofWestern Agora of Xanthos in the Byzantineperiod through two different groups of buildingswith commercial and religious functions, whose historical associations were revealedwith archaeological finds in the excavationsof the Western Agora. Evaluations made atthis point show that in the first half of the 5thcentury A.D. the agora was transformed intoa central area that, in the context of a nonintegralcomposition, became a large religiouscomplex as well as a center of private commercialactivity. Evidence also shows thatall these new areas within the former agorawere then abandoned in the 7th century andremained without significant activity until the10th century. Then this area was converted intoa small settlement comprised of simple residentialplaces and workshops utilized in the10th and 11th centuries. That material finds forthe 13th century are only a few ceramics fromthe Byzantine and Seljuk cultures indicates thepresence of a nomadic culture in the area.
