Eating Disorders in Athletes

Öz:
The most common eating disorders in the world are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa; approximately 1% of the general population has anorexia nervosa and 4% bulimia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by a very low body weight, distorted perception of body weight, and a fear of weight gain. In bulimia nervosa, people secretly consume large amounts of food, followed by unhealthy methods to lose these calories. The binge eating disorder, which is considered one of the unusual eating disorders, is characterized by repeated binge eating episodes in which the person loses his or her eating control. Eating disorders and irregular diets are quite common in athletes. The incidence of eating disorders in athletes ranges from 1-62%, and there are studies showing that this frequency is higher in women. Early identification and treatment should be prioritized for athletic programs to determine whether the athlete's nutritional and weight control behaviors are temporary. Early detection of eating disorders prevents both health problems and the performance of the athlete from being affected negatively. For this purpose; there are some screening tests developed for female athletes such as The Female Athlete Screening Tool, The Athletic Milieu Direct Questionnaire and The Physiologic Screening Test. Once athletes are diagnosed with eating disorders, it is important to establish a multidisciplinary and patient-centered care program with knowledgeable and experienced health professionals. Eating disorders in athletes, especially in women athletes, lead to serious health problems and adversely affect sport performance, suggesting that further development and implementation of athlete-specific new screening tools should be given greater importance.
