MARATHON and BUTTERFLY EFFECT

Öz:
Marathon is a road running event with a distance of 42km 195m. It is the only organization in which thousands of people, all running simultaneously, can actively participate, and currently it is one of the greatest sporting events which receives global attention. Marathon running requires not only great effort but also physical and mental endurance. With the increase in the number of marathon organizations which have been held for more than hundred years, the number of participants has also gone up. Especially recently, thanks to its increased global popularity and success, marathon organizations have turned into a sports tourism event and sports marketting which significantly affect the economy. From this standpoint, considering the effects of marathon running as butterfly effects metaphorically is the focus of this article. Apart from their effects on tourism and economy, marathon events have also social impacts on society. Participation of people from different countries, cultures and cities in marathon organisation highly affects the life styles and attitudes of the people living in the city where a marathon is held. That is why in this article, the economic, touristic and social effects of marathon running which occured with its transformation into mass sport throughout the history are aimed to be examined through extensive literature review. Marathon running which was present in the first Olympics and has been part of the Olympics for 123 years has an effect increasing continuosly day by day. The butterfly effect in marathon running can be classified as global scale, participation (female, male, disabled and different age groups) economic, touristic and social impact. As the global effect of a butterfly flapping its wings, marathon, which started with the myth of Pheidippides, and which is becoming popular and center of interest among all age groups, has turned into mass sport.
