Evaluation of Erectile Function in Men with Lower Urinary System Symptoms

Öz:
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between erectile dysfunction (ED) and lower urinary tract symptoms(LUTS).Methods: Sixty-two patients with LUTS due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) were included in the study. Fifty-eight healthy male patients wereincluded in the study as control group. Ages, comorbidities, body mass index and previous surgeries of the patients were determined. The patientswere asked to complete the International Prostate Symptom Score and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaires. Results: The mean age was 61.41 (41-78) years in the patients with LUTS and 62.34 (40-81) years in the control group. There was no statisticallysignificant difference between the two groups in terms of age. It was observed that LUTS severity increased significantly with age (p<0.05). When allsubjects were evaluated, there was a statistically significant relationship between LUTS and ED. When the IIEF-5 score less than 22 is accepted as ED,ED was present in 59.06% of patients with LUTS and 29.1% in asymptomatic patients. In addition, the rate of ED was significantly increased with age,as expected (p<0.05).Conclusion: The main finding in our study was that LUTS was independently associated with ED. Because of the relationship between LUTS/BPH andmale sexual dysfunction, patients presenting with any of these conditions should be routinely screened for other conditions. A better understandingof the molecular pathways beneath this relationship can help to better define clinical trials.
