Modeling highway projects: The need for Highway Information Modeling (HIM) guideline and information exchange

Öz:
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is one of the latest trends in the construction sector and utilized formodeling, reviewing and analyzing building projects for the last two decades with benefits includingvisualization, planning, and estimation. BIM provides a well-organized and streamlined approach forbuilding projects; however, its application for highway projects has been scarce. Progressing requirements, increasing number of stakeholders, integrated design solutions, expanding model uses and rapid evolution ofconstruction sector lead to the implementation and integration of new technologies and applications. Thus,Highway Information Modeling (HIM) becomes a necessity to facilitate design, quantity take-off,simulation, clash detection and many other uses. However, neither the definitions of the uses nor theplatforms to perform such analysis on highway projects throughout their life cycle are sufficient and welldefined. Hence, the initial objective of this study is to provide an overview of information necessary fordefining HIM concepts and developing HIM guidelines. The secondary objective is to present a case studyto illustrate the elementary interoperability capabilities of current tools. Interoperability seeks informationexchange requirements and data loss in physical, functional and semantic properties of elements.
