THE EFFECTS OF THUMBSUCKING HABIT ON EXTERNAL NASAL MORPHOLOGY IN YOUNG MEN: A PHOTOGRAMMETRIC STUDY

Öz:

Objective: In this study, we planned to determine primarily its effect on the craniofacial development and to measure the distancebetween the points, which were determined with the photogrammetric measurements over the nasal structures of the participants, who hadthumb sucking habit up to 4 years of age in their childhood depending on the position of the hand and the pressure on the external nasalstructures.Material and Methods: 20 male participants who have sucked their finger until at least 4 years of age and 30 healthy male volunteerswho didn’t have any thumb sucking habit were included in our study.To ensure standardization, each person was photographed at the same distance (1 meter) from the same camera. Photogrammetricevaluation was performed blindly. We took photos of each participant with the same camera at the same distance (1 m). Measurements were made from the front, lateral and basal profiles and the results were analysed.Results: As a consequence of this study, nasal type width values were found to be significantly higher and the nose length was significantly shorter compared to the normal values.Conclusion: These results indicated that ın nasal development period, morphology might be affected depending on many factors inpeople with thumb sucking behaviour.

GENÇ ERKEKLERDE PARMAK EMME ALIŞKANLIĞININ EKSTERNAL NAZAL MORFOLOJİ ÜZERİNE ETKİSİ: FOTOGRAMETRİK ÇALIŞMA

Öz:

Amaç: Bu çalışmada öncelikle kraniofasyal gelişim üzerine etkisi ve elin pozisyon itibari ile eksternal burun yapılarına basısı nedeni ile çocukluk dönemde en az 4 yıl parmak emmiş olan kişilerin fotogramerik ölçümleri ile burun yapıları üzerinde belirlenen noktasal alanlar arası mesafelerin ölçülmesi planlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: En az 4 yaşına kadar sadece parmak emmiş olan 20 erkek ve parmak emmemiş 30 sağlıklı gönüllü erkek çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. Standardizasyonu sağlamak için her kişiye ayn ı fotoğraf makinesi ile ayn ı mesafeden (1 m uzaklıktan) fotoğraflamalar yapılmıştır. Fotogrametrik değerlendirme kör olarak yapılmıştır. Ön, yan ve bazal profillerden ölçümler yapılarak analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular: Sonuç olarak nazal tip genişliği değerleri normal değerlere göre anlamlı düzeyde daha fazla, burun uzunluğunun ise daha kısa olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç: Bu sonuçlar doğrultusunda parmak emen kişilerde, nazal gelişim döneminde birçok faktöre de bağlı olarak, morfolojinin etkilenebileceğini düşünmekteyiz.
