A Cultural Perspective of The Glass Cliff Phenomenon

Öz:
The purpose of this paper is to reveal whether thephenomenon of the glass cliff, a concept related togender discrimination, is valid in Turkey, where thelevel of femininity is relatively high. While the samplingmethod used was convenience sampling, the datacollection tool was a questionnaire. The study wasconducted with 240 managers in the business worldand the appointment to a glass cliff position wasassessed in terms of “suitability, leadership, and trust”dimensions. The findings revealed that managers didnot opt for a female executive candidate as the CEO,using a scenario in which the “company performanceis poor.” Accordingly, in consideration of contextualfundamentals, it can be suggested that the conceptof the glass cliff, a term coined by psychologistsRyan and Haslam in the United Kingdom, wheremasculinity is predominant, may not be valid forTurkey, where the level of masculinity is relativelylow.

Cam Uçurum Olgusuna Kültürel Bir Bakış

Öz:
Bu çalışmanın amacı cinsiyet ayrımcılığıyla ilgili güncel bir kavram olan cam uçurum fenomeninin dişillik seviyesi kısmen yüksek olan Türkiye’de geçerli olup olmadığını araştırmaktır. Örnekleme metodu kolayda örnekleme iken veri toplama aracı ankettir. Çalışma iş dünyasındaki 240 yöneticiye uygulanmıştır ve bir cam uçurum pozisyonuna atamada “uygunluk, liderlik ve güven” boyutları dikkate alınmıştır. Bulgular göstermiştir ki yöneticiler şirket performansının kötü olduğu bir senaryoda, kadın yönetici adayını CEO olarak tercih etmemişlerdir. Buna göre bağlamsal temeller dikkate alındığında erilliğin baskın olduğu Birleşik Krallıkta psikolog olan Ryan ve Haslam tarafından ortaya atılan cam uçurum kavramının erillik seviyesinin kısmen düşük olduğu Türkiye’de geçerli olamayabileceği söylenebilir.
