Direct embryo transfer: From nitrogen tank to the uterus

Öz:
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of some parameters on pregnancy rates in direct embryo transfer to recipient heifers. Animal material of the study consisted of 89 heifers. A total of 138 embryos were transferred because the heifers that did not conceive were retransferred. Ninety one of the transfers were performed directly, 47 of them were performed after being thawed in the water bath and being held in 2 medium for 5 minutes. Estrus - ovulation time interval, the side of the ovary where ovulation occurred, the time interval from ovulation to the day of transfer, embryo practitioners, direct or gradually thawed transfers had no effect on the pregnancy rate (P> 0.05). When evaluated according to the stage of the embryo, pregnancy rates in morula, early blastocysts and blastocysts were 64.3% (n=27), 44.3% (n=27) and 74.3% (n=26), respectively. Pregnancy rate after transfer of blastocysts and morula was significantly higher than those of the early blastocyst stage (P<0.05). There was a 17.5% (n=14) loss due to embryonic and fetal death in pregnant heifers. It is thought that transferring embryos at the morula and blastocyst stage, the presence of an active corpus luteum before the transfer, rapid direct transfers, the procurement of the embryo from the known practitioner and the gradually thawing of the transfers can increase the pregnancy rates.
