TY - JOUR TI - Temperament and character dimensions, marital adjustment, and sexual satisfaction in couples with sexual dysfunction AB - Object: The objective of the study is to investigate thedifferences in temperament and character dimensions,marital adjustment and sexual satisfaction between thecouples with and without sexual dysfunction (SD).Methods: The study group consists of 78 marriedwomen and 23 married men with SD diagnosis accordingto DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria and also their spouses(n=202). The comparison group is composed of marriedcouples without SD (n=200). The participants wereapplied Personal Information Form, Temperament andCharacter Inventory (TCI), Golombok-Rust Inventory ofSexual Satisfaction (GRISS), Dyadic Adjustment Scale(DAS). Results: The couples with SD were observed tohave higher cooperativeness and self-transcendence andlower self-directedness scores than those of the comparisongroup. The women partners in the couples with SDwere found to take higher harm avoidance and lowerself-directedness scores than the women in comparisongroup. Dyadic satisfaction, affectional expression andDAS total scores in the couples with SD were seen to besignificantly less than those of the couples in the comparisongroup. It was found out that the women in thecouples with SD took significantly higher scores in GRISStotal score and all subscales, and men in the coupleswith SD took significantly higher scores in GRISS totalscore and subscales of satisfaction, avoidance, prematureejaculation and impotence than those in the comparisongroup. Discussion: It can be said thatcyclothymic character, harm avoidance and self-directednesswere the risk factors for SD. Marital adjustment andsexual satisfaction are insufficient in the couples withSD.
