AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE INTER-CULTURAL INTERACTION OF TURKISH UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ STUDY ABROAD (SA) EXPERIENCES: THE CASE OF ERASMUS STUDENTS

AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE INTER-CULTURAL INTERACTION OF TURKISH UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ STUDY ABROAD (SA) EXPERIENCES: THE CASE OF ERASMUS STUDENTS
Öz: This study explored the motivation, expectations, and yielded outcomes of tertiary students participated within Erasmusprogram. With this purpose, a qualitative analysis was sought to understand tertiary level students’ intercultural contacts intheir host countries. The participants were 8 Erasmus students who spent a semester in various countries within Erasmusprogram. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants and the data drawn from the interviews wereanalyzed through content analysis. Results revealed that participants showed an openness with an inter-cultural sensitivity.They also made effort to improve their foreign language proficiency particularly English during in the host country. However,they did not become interested in learning the local language of the host country with a general tendency. Also, theparticipants did not have long-term career plans for future stay in their minds.

Öz: Bu çalışma, yurt dışı eğitimi kapsamında Erasmus programına dâhil olmuş Türk üniversite öğrencilerinin programa olan motivasyonlarını, beklentilerini ve elde ettikleri kazanımları araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu doğrultuda, programa katılan üniversite öğrencilerinin ev sahibi bir ülkede kültürler-arası etkileşimleri nitel verilerle analiz edilmiştir. Katılımcılar Erasmus kapsamındaki ülkelerde bir yarıyıl geçirmiş farklı bölümlerde eğitim gören 8 Türk üniversite öğrencisidir. Veriler yarı yapılandırılmış mülakatlar yoluyla elde edilmiş ve sonuçlar içerik analizine tabi tutulmuştur. Elde edilen bulgular, katılımcıların, açıklık, anlayış ve kültürlerarası hassasiyet gösterdiğini ortaya koymuştur. Katılımcılar ayrıca yabancı dil bilgilerini özellikle de İngilizce bilgilerini geliştirmek için çaba sarf etmişlerdir. Bununla birlikte katılımcıların genel olarak ev sahibi ülkenin dilini öğrenmeye karşı bir ilgi duymadıkları görülmüştür. Ayrıca katılımcıların gelecekteki uzun süreli kariyer planlamalarında yabancı bir ülkede kalma düşüncelerinin olmadığı görülmüştür.
