Occupational Mental Diseases in Agricultural Sector and Social Work

Öz:
The agricultural sector is the primary sector in terms of food production for the continuation of life and providing raw materials to the industrial sector. The concept of agricultural worker includes people who work in their own agricultural production areas, farm owners, employers, permanent paid workers, seasonal workers, and all the members of the family. Research shows that, there are many stressors related to mental diseases including unhealthy and unsafe living and working areas, continuous migration, lack of access to basic needs, services, and working life rights, bad weather conditions during harvest season, failure to get the expected product due to flood and drought, deterioration of machinery, sickness of animals, incentives not being paid on time and adequately, low level of knowledge and awareness of employees about financing management and new technologies, physical health problems, thermal (hot/cold) stress, not knowing the laws of agriculture, lack of holidays, long working hours, increasing production demand against decreasing number of farmers, and accidents and injuries. It is thought that it will be beneficial for risk assessment and management, including physical, chemical and psychosocial hazards, to cover social protection (social security, social benefits and social services) with a rights-based approach to prevent work-related mental disorders of agriculture workers.
