TY - JOUR TI - Relationship between Mode of Delivery and Frequency and Treatment Outcomes of Congenital Nasolacrimal Dacryostenosis AB - Introduction: The present study evaluates the relationshipbetween the mode of delivery and the frequency and treatmentoutcomes of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNDO).Methods: The medical records of children who were referredto oculoplasty outpatient clinics due to epiphora anddiagnosed with CNDO following ophthalmological examinationwere reviewed retrospectively. The patients’ demographiccharacteristics, history of pregnancy and delivery, clinicalcharacteristics of CNDO, and treatment outcomes wereevaluated. Results: The study included 167 eyes of 136 patients. Themode of delivery was vaginal in 61 patients (45%) and cesareansection in 75 patients (55%). The patients delivered by cesareansection were assigned to group 1, and those delivered viathe vaginal route were assigned to group 2. The mean age(p=0.554), gender distribution (p=0.661), laterality (p=0.075)and mean birth weight (p=0.918) did not differ significantlybetween the two groups. The success rate of probing did notdiffer significantly between the two groups (p=0.146).Conclusion: The present study found that the mode of deliverydid not affect the frequency of CNDO in babies born at term, and there was also no significant difference in the success rateof probing between the two groups. Although the differencewas not statistically significant, the authors found cesareansection to be associated with a higher risk of CNDO.
