Debating the Pandemic: Ecology, Neoliberalism and Crisis Management

Öz:
Caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the Covid-19 pandemic, from the outset in March 2020, proved that it could not be considered solely as a public-health crisis, and it rendered social sciences, and particularly political science, equally relevant in addressing the pandemic worldwide. This article addresses three essential themes of political science we understand interrelated that rose to prominence in the literature formed in the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic: the ecological crisis; the crisis of neoliberalism; and the intertwined crises of legitimacy and crisis management. Covid-19 pandemic, with its causes and consequences, is discussed more and more as part of a process that threatens the world ecological system. The pandemic, therefore, is understood in the social science literature as one of the phenomena related to the ecological crisis. Departing from the assumption that the ecological crisis cannot be addressed independently from human beings’ productive activities, the connections between the crisis dynamics of neoliberal capitalism, a historically specific and contemporary form of such activities, and the crisis entailed by the pandemic should be addressed by the discussions in social science disciplines. In the circumstances of this dual endogenous and exogenous crisis, the dilemmas of the states, which have adopted neoliberal policies, vis-à-vis crisis management, and the management and legitimacy crisis of the neoliberal states that existed before the pandemic and aggravated during the pandemic, come forth as interrelated problems. This article critically engages with the scholarly work in response to the crises the pandemic entailed by locating them in their wider contexts of the existing literature before the pandemic and assesses the main premises of the current research
