The Evaluation of the Awareness About the Effects ofSmoking on Oral and Periodontal Health

Öz:
Objective: The clinical signs of periodontal disease maynegatively affect the quality of life. In addition, smoking is an impor tant risk factor for oral and periodontal diseases. Therefore, the aim ofthis study was to assess the patients’ awareness of the effects of smo king on oral health and investigate the impacts of periodontal diseaseon oral health-related quality of life. Material and Methods: One hun dred and forty participants were diagnosed according to the 2017 clas sification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions. Aquestionnaire was used to analyze the patients’ awareness of the effectsof smoking and oral health-related quality of life was measured usingOral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) scale. Statistical tests wereperformed in order to assess the association between categorical vari ables and ordinal logistic regression was applied to evaluate risk factorsof the OHIP-14 score. Results: The patients included in the study hadlow level of awareness of the relationship between smoking and thefailure of periodontal and implant therapy. There was a significant dif ference among smokers, non- and ex-smokers in awareness of the ef fect of smoking on taste alteration. In study group, 32% of patients werediagnosed with gingivitis, 52% of patients were diagnosed with perio dontitis and 16% of patients were diagnosed with reduced periodon tium with gingivitis. No significant difference was found amongperiodontal disease groups in terms of total OHIP-14 scores. Conclu sion: As a result of this study, smokers were aware of the effects ofsmoking on oral health as well as non-smokers and ex-smokers. It is im portant that dental professionals should inform their patients about theoral effects of smoking and encourage smoking cessation.

Öz:
Amaç: Periodontal hastalık, bulgu ve semptomları yaşamkalitesini olumsuz etkileyebilir. Ek olarak sigara, oral ve periodontalhastalıklar için önemli bir risk faktörüdür. Bu nedenle bu çalışmanınamacı, hastaların sigara içmenin ağız sağlığı üzerindeki etkilerihakkındaki farkındalığını değerlendirmek ve periodontal hastalığın ağızsağlığı ile ilişkili yaşam kalitesine etkisini araştırmaktır. Gereç ve Yön temler: Yüz kırk katılımcıya, 2017 periodontal ve peri-implanthastalıklar ve durumların sınıflandırılmasına göre teşhis konuldu.Hastaların, sigaranın etkileri hakkındaki farkındalıklarını analiz etmekiçin bir anket kullanıldı ve ağız sağlığı ile ilişkili yaşam kalitesi OralSağlık Etki Profili-14 ölçeği ile değerlendirildi. Kategorik değişkenlerarasındaki ilişkiyi değerlendirmek için istatistiksel testler yapıldı veOral Sağlık Etki Profili-14 ölçeği skorunun risk faktörlerinideğerlendirmek için ordinal lojistik regresyon uygulandı. Bulgular: Çalışmaya dâhil edilen hastalar, sigara ile periodontal ve implant te davileri başarısızlığı arasındaki ilişki bakımından düşük düzeydefarkındalığa sahipti. Sigaranın tat değişikliği üzerine etkisininfarkındalığı bakımından; sigara içen, hiç içmemiş ve eski içicilerarasında anlamlı fark vardı. Çalışma grubunda, hastaların %32’sine gin givitis, %52’sine periodontitis, %16’sına azalmış periodonsiyumda gin givitis teşhisi konmuştur. Periodontal hastalık grupları arasında totalOral Sağlık Etki Profili-14 ölçeği puanları bakımından anlamlı farklılıkbulunmadı. Sonuç: Çalışmanın sonuçlarına göre sigara kullananlar, hiçkullanmamış ve eski içiciler kadar sigaranın oral sağlığa etkileri ile il gili farkındalığa sahiptirler. Bununla birlikte diş hekimlerinin,hastalarını sigaranın oral etkileri ile ilgili bilgilendirmesi ve sigarabırakma konusunda cesaretlendirmesi önemlidir.
