Evaluation of energy expenditure using three different exercise protocols in asthmatic subjects

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the energy expenditure of asthmatic patients during three exercise protocols.Material and methods: Thirty asthmatic patients voluntarily participated in this study after being screened by a physician. The subjects had six minutes exercise on the bicycle ergometry, free running and step test. The blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) were monitored pre and post exercise. Rate pressure product (RPP) was calculated, and used as myocardial oxygen consumption. Results: The results of the study revealed a significant difference in the pre and post exercise BP, HR and RPP in all the 3 exercise protocols (p<0.01). A significant difference also existed in energy expenditure when the three exercise protocols were compared using One-way ANOVA (p<0.01). Post hoc analysis revealed that energy expenditure on bicycle ergometry was significantly lower than either free running or step test (p<0.01). No significant difference was found between free running and step exercise RPP (p>0.01).Conclusion: As the clinical usefulness of exercise tests in patients with obstructive pulmonary disease continue to generate debate, we conclude that six-min free running and bicycle ergometry tests may be useful in assessing exercise tolerance among the asthmatic patients.
