TY - JOUR TI - Hip-preserving reconstruction of the proximal femur witha vascularized fibula autograft and liquid-nitrogen-treatedtumor bearing bone AB - A five-year-old boy with Ewing sarcoma of the proximal femurwas operated at our institution with limb-sparing surgeryand biological reconstruction of the proximal femur with avascularized fibular autograft. During this procedure, theproximal femur was soaked in liquid nitrogen which wassubsequently fixed to the fibular autograft, while the epiphysisof the femoral head was spared. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of epiphysis-sparing surgery of theproximal femur via a vascularized fibular autograft surroundedby a liquid nitrogen-treated tumor bearing bone autograft.Three years postoperatively, the patient remains disease-free,has a full weight-bearing extremity with good function, anda remodeled proximal femur with minimal deformity. Thereare no radiological or clinical signs indicative of femoralhead osteonecrosis. In conclusion, hip-sparing biologicalreconstruction is a successful method of limb preservation asan alternative to tumor endoprostheses.
