CHANGING OF PANHELLENIC SANCTURAIES; FESTIVALS, BATHS, ATHLETICS AND SMINTHEION SAMPLES

Öz:
Panhellenic sanctuaries are religious centers where sacrifices are cut, offerings are offered and traditional religious ceremonies are carry out. In terms of planning and settlement, they are essentially surrounded by temenos where altar and monumental temple are located in center. These saancturaries eventually turn into festival sites visited by large masses of people. In this context, the presence of four great panhellenic sanctuaries in Greece, famous for their festivals and sports organizations, is an indication of a rooted tradition. With the Romanization, not only these four great sanctuaries, but also many holy festivals and Olympic sports organizations are held in competition with them. In this period, Smintheion has been re-planned and the agonists made by sportsmen from far wider regiones are considered equivalent to Pythia games in Delphi. In terms of content, inspired by four major panhellen festivals such as Olympia, Nemea, Delphi and Isthmia, Smintheia Pauleia Games is another reflection of the radical change in the sanctuary. Especially in line with necessary needsnew building types have emerged such as italic baths. So Smintheionis the best example of the use of Rome’s political and cultural power for cultural unity and propaganda in the Hellenic sanctuaries.
