Anahtar Kelime: Does Financial Development and Innovation Increase Renewable Energy Production in Turkey?
Öz: Energy is one of the most important inputs to increase economic growth in today's economies. When
energy consumption increases, the output increases and accordingly an increase in economic growth is
observed. As it is known, Turkey has adopted an export-based growth model. Increasing production based on
export-led growth model brought higher energy demand. This has led to an increase in energy imports and thus
high foreign energy dependence. With the increase in industrialization and population in recent years,
renewable energy sources have gained importance as an alternative source of energy to meet the increasing
energy demand. In this context, countries have turned their attention from fossil energy sources to renewable
energy sources in order to reduce foreign dependence in energy as well as to increase environmental quality.
The aim of the study is to investigate the impact of financial development and innovation on renewable energy
production in Turkey for the period 1968-2015. In this context, real GDP and CO2 emissions, which are
assumed to have an impact on renewable energy production, are included in the model, as well as the variables
of renewable energy production, innovation and financial development. The relationship between the variables
was investigated using the ARDL Bounds Test approach. According to the estimation results of the study, it
was found that financial development, innovation and GDP have a positive and statistically significant effect
on renewable energy production. On the other hand, the study found that the effect of CO2 emission on
renewable energy production is statistically significant and negative.
