TI  - AWARENESS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ATTITUDE REGARDING DENTAL IMPLANTS IN PATIENTS ATTENDING A UNIVERSITY DENTAL
CLINIC
AB  - Background and Aims: Inadequate and incorrect information
about dental implants causes patients to have unrealistic
expectations. This study aimed to evaluate the level and
sources of information on dental implants among patients at a
university dental clinic.
Material and Methods: We designed a standardized 18-item
questionnaire to assess patients’ knowledge, awareness, and
attitudes regarding dental implants. The data collected were
evaluated with respect to source and amount of information
and levels of information on prosthodontic options, dental
implant surgeries, and dental implant acceptance.
Results: The study recruited 505 participants aged 13 to 82
years (mean: 38.31 years), with a male–female ratio of 1:1.4.
Of the participants, 47% were aware of dental implants as
alternative replacements for missing teeth. Meanwhile, 60%,
who desired the fixed prosthetic denture, demanded implant-
supported prosthetic rehabilitation for their missing teeth. High
cost was reported as the major disadvantage of dental implant
treatment, while the major advantage was longevity of dental
implants. Health workers were the main source of information.
About half (58%) of the participants reported that specialists
in implantology can perform dental implant surgery, whereas
56.2% of them believed that a professor, associate professor,
or assistant professor working at dental office was the best
option for dental implant treatment.
Conclusion: The participants had a moderate level of
awareness about dental implants as a treatment option for
missing teeth.
