A GROUP OF MIDDLE BYZANTINE CERAMIC FROM THE TROY MUSEUM

Öz:
This article discusses a group of Middle Byzantine glazed pottery which have recorded to the inventory of the Troy Museum at the begining of 2020. These ceramics, which can be included in the “Plain Glazed Ware in Reddish and Grey Fabric”, with their morphological features are less known in the Byzantine ceramic repertoire and they take attentions with their good conditions. All of these glazed ceramics are table wares. Two of them are chafing dishes that keep the food warm and serve on the table, one is a double-handled cup and the other twelve are small single- handled jugs. The seven of jugs have trefoil rims and the other five have straight rims also all the jugs have a flat bottom. We can say that some round and cylindirical body jugs and some sagging bag body jugs stand out with their cylindrical necks, especially those with straight rim. Also, there is a group that can be regarded as miniature among the trefoil rims jugs. In addition, with the exception of a small fracture in the rim of only one, all of the jugs are undamaged and give full form. And, some of the jugs, which are understood to have been submerged for a long time, because of they have partial calcification and patina on their surfaces. However, it is understood that the glazed surfaces of the works were cleaned by various methods before coming to the museum. Although the Middle Byzantine glazed ceramic samples from the Troy Museum are not stratigraphical finds, we hope that they will make significant contributions to the interpretation of the ceramics of the period. As a matter of fact that almost all of them are part of the same collection, they may have been produced in the same period and may have captured a shipwreck that was submerged in the same period.
