Yaşlılık çağı depresyonunun risk etkenleri ve etiyolojisine yönelik bir gözden geçirme

Öz:

Yaşlı nüfusun giderek artmasıyla yaşlılık çağı depresyonu psikiyatrik hastalıklar içinde önem kazanmaktadır. Ancak depresif belirtilerin yaşlanmanın doğal bir sonucu olarak görülmesi, tanı ve tedaviyi geciktirerek intihar gibi komplikasyonların ortaya çıkmasına neden olabilmektedir. Yaşlılıkta ortaya çıkan depresyon daha genç gruptakine oranla farklı risk etkenlerine sahiptir. Özellikle yas ve fiziksel hastalıklar bu yaş grubunda daha sık gözlenmekte ve depresyon riskini artırmaktadır, ileri yaşlarda sosyal destek özellikle önem kazanmaktadır. Sosyal desteğin azalması ve huzurevinde kalmak gibi etkenler yaşlıları depresyona daha açık hale getirmektedir. Bunların yanı sıra beyinde strok veya frontal lobda sağlıklı kontrollere göre daha çok volüm kaybının olması gibi patolojik değişmelerin de yaşlılık çağı depresyonuyla ilişkili olduğu bildirilmektedir. Tüm bu biyolojik ve psikososyal risklerin belirlenmesi ileri yaşlarda görülen depresyona erken müdahale ile yaşlılık döneminde yaşam kalitesinin artırılmasına olanak sağlayacaktır. Bu yazıda yaşlılık çağı depresyonuyla ilgili risk etkenleri ve etiyolojik etkenler gözden geçirilmiştir.
