Importance of inulin as a prebiotic in poultry nutrition

Öz:
Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that target certain components within the microbiota of the animal large intestine. Prebiotics are not digested in the digestive system of poultry and affect the host beneficially by selectively stimulating the growth and/or metabolic activity of one or more naturally present or introduced bacterial species (probiotic) in the intestine. Inulin has attracted much attention recently as nonabsorbable carbonhydrates with prebiotic properties. Functioning as a prebiotic, in poultry, inulin has been associated with enhancing the gastrointestinal system and immune system. When inulin was added to a control diet of poultry, significant increases were noted in colonic bifidobacterial and lactobacil populations. It has been proposed that these changes promote both colonic and systemic health through modification of the intestinal microflora.
