A Diagnostic Study of Mathematics Students' Motivational Styles
Öz: This study aimed to reveal the motivational styles of mathematics students and to find out the gender differences regarding motivational styles. Students' motivational styles were explored by a questionnaire whose items were written to correspond to four motivational patterns: achievement, curiosity, consciousness and sociability. A total of 284 university students who were studying Mathematics in the Faculty of Science in Abant izzet Baysal University participated in this study. The results showed that i) for the whole sample, the numbers of curious and conscious students are fairly higher than the achiever and the social students. However, there are differences for each level, ii) more boys than girls appeared as curios, on the other hand, more girls than boys appeared as conscious. The implications of the results for teaching and learning mathematics as well as for instructional materials are discussed on the basis of these findings as well as in the light of findings of other studies in the literature.
