The relationship between memory and architecture: a proposal model

Öz:
Researchers studying the issues of housing and its associated characteristics agree on the concept that housing images reflecting a traditional lifestyle play an important role in allowing people to establish a strong relationship with the past. In order to establish this connection, the importance of being able to interact with one’s environment and store this interaction in their mind becomes apparent. Memory is the ability to mentally store the past and recall it. It is a momentary mental transaction that becomes a conscious act. Memory is not only a faculty to store the past; it is also simultaneously the place in which the outcome of interactions between subject and object are stored. This study is shaped and developed on the existence of a relation between memory and architecture. The concept of memory, which is treated by various disciplines from various viewpoints, is examined in this study within the framework of a model built on what part of an individual's recollection is spatial, and what aspects of a space are recollected. The childhood home where an individual lived through an important part of his life is selected as the space for relation of memory and architecture. The purpose of the study is to examine the formation of spatial memory, assess the relations of spatial elements with the memory, and identify spatial elements maintained in the memory. The phenomenon of memory has, since Aristotle to date, occupied the minds of many thinkers, and the formation of memory between senses and experience has been examined in various interpretations. Episodic and semantic distinctions of the memory have been referred to in neurological classification of the relation between the space and the memory. The idea that memory is not only individually, but also socially determined has combined the individually formed spatial memory with social, political, architectural and cultural events, traditions and habits, neighborhood relations and recollected playgrounds of the age under the same denominator. The idea that the study being shaped on concepts of memory, perception and home should be handled in a model aimed at explaining what spatial elements might be inputs to the permanent memory would be useful for the applicability of the study is the factor that determined the scope and method of the study. Individual and societal aspects of the memory are considered in building the model. Home, in a sense, is the expression of lifestyles of people. Since the memory of an individual is a product of his lifestyle, the relation between the individual's home and memory goes back to his childhood home where the spatial memory was first formed. The concept of home is examined for various aspects in the scope of this study where the relation of memory and architecture is investigated. Leading studies that identify the relation between memory and space are Bachelard's study (1969) which covered subconscious and superconscious meanings of home, Cooper and Marcus' study (1992, 1995) in which they investigated the value of childhood homes and the childhood spaces recollected in adult age, Chawla's (1986) autobiographical memoir analyses and study analyzing the feelings left by childhood spaces, and Sebba's work (1991) investigating environmental experience of adults from their childhood. Works covering multi-faceted meanings of a home are also viewed in the relation of memory and spaces. Under such studies, many aspects and criteria come out which the person would code his home into his memory. The model proposed in this study is assessed by interviews with individuals who have lived in various cities and urban fabrics of Turkey and are from noted families of their region on their childhood homes. This study indicates that a person's negative and positive experiences with his home have been coded into the memory; such codes have been stored in the memory and could be retrieved from the memory at certain times. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully interpret such memory phases, and analyze aspects that could be used to steer housing research and design. The individual and social structure as well as steering character of the memory is a topic that must be focused on so as to generate higher quality media in architecture research.
