Forensic odontology education in the dentistry faculties in Turkey

Öz:

Fiziksel faktörler ve dış etkenlerden diğer organlara kıyasla fazla etkilenmemeleri, uzun süre morfolojik yapılarını koruyabilmeleri, sıklıkla cesetle birlikte bulunabilmeleri ve zaman kaybını en aza indirmelerinden dolayı dişler ve diş yapılarının sayısız özelliklerinden kimliklendirmeye gitmenin kullanışlı bir yöntem olduğu bilinmektedir. Tıbbi kimlik tespitinde diş hekimleriyle yapılan konsültasyonlar sonucunda dişler ve diş restorasyonlarından yararlanılabilmesi, adli diş hekimliğinin önemini ortaya koymaktadır.Kesitsel nitelikteki bu çalışmada; adli diş hekimliği eğitimi ve öğretiminin önemi vurgulanarak, Türkiye’deki diş hekimliği fakültelerinde verilen adli diş hekimliği eğitim ve öğretiminin sayısal durumunu tesbit etmek ve verilen derslerin konuları ile eğitimin kimler tarafından verildiğinin saptanması amaçlanmıştır.Çalışmada kullanılacak veriler, üniversitelerin güncel web sayfalarından, diş hekimliği fakültelerinin yıllık müfredat programlarından ve Türkiye’deki diş hekimliği fakülteleri ile kurulan iletişim yoluyla elde edilmiştir. Ülkemizde halen adli diş hekimi sayısı oldukça azdır. Ancak yasal düzenlemelerimize göre her diş hekimi, kimlik tespiti ya da diğer oral bulgular açısından bilirkişi olarak atanabilmektedir. Bu nedenle diş hekimliği fakültelerinde gerekli adli tıp eğitimi standardize edilerek verilmelidir.

Öz:

It is known that dental impressions are frequently used in criminal investigations as a highly accurate and time-saving method. Indeed, the teeth resist physical trauma and external factors, they retain their morphological structure for a long time, and last but not least, they are mostly acquired immediately along with the victim. In a forensic identification process, the contrubitions of dentists such as teeth examinations and teeth reconstructions implicate the importance of forensic dentistry.In this cross-sectional study, it has been aimed to emphasize on the importance of forensic dentistry education, to determine the numeric status of forensic dentistry education in schools of dentistry in Turkey, and determine the properties of the lecturers who give forensic dentistry lectures.The data used for this study has been gathered from the up-to-date websites of the universities, annual curriculums of Dentistry Schools, and direct correspondance. There are still very few forensic dentists in our country. But according to our laws, any dentist can be assigned as an expert for dental identification or evaluation of other oral findings. Therefore, in schools of dentistry, necessary forensic dentistry lectures should be given in standardized basis.
