Effect of plant based diet on oral and dental health

Öz:
Plant-based dietary patterns are becoming increasingly po- pular because of a variety of reported health benefits to ove- rall health. The concept of plant-based diet varies widely in definition, ranging from exclusion of all animal products as in vegan diets to having predominantly vegetables while inc- luding fish, poultry, egg or dairy products. Although resear- ch on the effects of plant-based diets on general health has increased considerably, there are very few data on oral-den- tal health in individuals who have a plant-based diet. In this review, it is aimed to evaluate the studies on oral health and oral microbiome in individuals who have a plant based diet. In most of the studies, the relationship between the plant based diet pattern and tooth decay, dental erosion and periodontal health has been investigated. Although different results have been reported in the studies, it is emphasized that these indi- viduals should be evaluated carefully in terms of caries and erosion risks. There are limited studies investigating the effect of plant based diet on oral microbiota and saliva structure. A significant portion of the studies investigating the change of oral microbiota against dietary habits report that dietary pattern does not have a significant effect on the forma- tion of the oral microbial community. However, it is thou- ght that higher evidence level results will be obtained by planning wider studies on this subject and including indi- viduals who follow a longer-term plant based diet.
