Views of senior nursing students on patient safety

Öz:

Çalışmamızın amacı bir hemşirelik yüksek okulu son sınıf öğrencilerinin hasta güvenliği ile ilgili bilgi düzeylerinin ve görüşlerinin değerlendirilmesidir. Örneklem grubunu 81 askeri hemşirelik öğrencisinin oluşturduğu bu çalışma tanımlayıcı tipte gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veriler katılımcıların tanımlayıcı özellikleri, hasta güvenliği ile ilgili bilgi ve görüşlerini içeren bir anket yoluyla toplanmıştır. Öğrencilerin gözünden hasta güvenliği kavramına giren ilk 3 konu; ilaç güvenliğinin sağlanması (%87.65), hastane enfeksiyonlarının önlenmesi (%87.65) ve hasta düşmelerinin önlenmesidir (%86.41). Katılımcıların gözünden istenmeyen olayların bildirimi konusu incelendiğinde; çoğunluğu hastane başhemşiresini olayla ilgili bilgilendireceklerini ifade etmiştir. Bulgular katılımcıların istenmeyen olayların bildirimi konusunda pozitif bir tutum içerisinde olduklarını göstermektedir. Bu çalışma hemşirelik eğitiminde hasta güvenliği konusunda eğitimin ve uygulama gereksiniminin altını çizmektedir. Sağlık bakımında güvenli bir ortam oluşturabilmek ve uzun süreli etki sağlamak için öğrencilerin hasta güvenliği konusunda farkındalıkları geliştirilmelidir.

Öz:

The objective of the study was to evaluate the views and the level of information regarding patient safety of the senior nursing students in a school of nursing. A descriptive design was used, with a convenience sample of 81 students at a university of military nursing in Turkey. Data were collected by using questionnaire descriptive characteristics of the participants, their knowledge and views about patient safety. The first three topics included in the concept of patient safety from the students views are provision of medicine safety (87.65 %), avoiding/following up infection in hospitals (87.65 %), avoiding patients falling down (86.41 %). The views of the participants about the reporting of an adverse event it is found that that they mostly will inform about it to the authorized nurse in the hospital. These findings show that the participants have a positive attitude towards informing about adverse events to others. This study underlines the importance of education and the need for implementing the patient safety in the nursing education. In order to establish safe environments for health-care and to have lasting effects, the students awareness about patient safety should be improved.
