Psychiatric aspects of infertility

Öz:
Infertility can be defined as a crisis with cultural, religious, and class related aspects, which coexistswith medical, psychiatric, psychological, and social problems. Relation between psychiatric andpsychological factors stem from a mutual interaction of both. Family is an important institution inmaintaining human existence and raising individuals in line with society s expectations. Fertilityand reproduction are seen as universal functions unique to women with raising children as theexpected result of the family institution. Incidence of infertility has increased recently and canbecome a life crisis for a couple. Even though not being able to have a child affects both sexesemotionally, women feel greater amounts of stress, pressure, anxiety, and depression. Consequenc-es of infertility arise from short and long-term devastating effects on both individual s physical andmental health, and marital system. Many studies focus on infertility related psychological andpsychiatric disorders, gender differences, relation between the causes of infertility and psycho-pathology, the effects of psychiatric evaluation and intervention -when necessaryon the course ofinfertility treatment, pregnancy rates, and childbirth. The most important underlying causes of highlevels of stress and anxiety that infertile women experience are the loss of maternity, reproduction, sense of self and genetic continuity. The aim of this review article is to investigate the relationshipbetween medically unexplained symptoms and psychiatric symptoms.
