Sociodemographic and professional factors influencing the professional quality of life and post-traumatic growth of oncology nurses

Öz:

Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate oncology nurses’ professional quality of life indicators such ascompassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, and burnout as well as post-traumatic growth and its sub-dimensionschanged interpersonal relationships, changed philosophy of life, and changed perception of self and the factors thataffect them.Methods: The data for this descriptive research were acquired via a web-based questionnaire between 01 June 2013and 31 January 2014. A nurse sociodemographic form, “Professional Quality of Life Inventory,” and “Post-TraumaticGrowth Inventory” were used as data acquisition tools. A total of 182 nurses participated in the study. The effect ofindependent variables on scale and subscale scores was calculated using the independent-samples t-test and one-wayANOVA.Results: In the statistical evaluation, nurses’ age, education level, number of children, oncology education, oncologyexperience, monthly shiftwork, weekly working hours, willingness to select nursing, and willingness to work with oncology patients significantly affected the inventories and their sub-dimension scores (p<0.05).Conclusion: Sociodemographic and professional factors affect professional life quality and post-traumatic growth. Theoncology nurse’s working environment should be modified to improve their professional quality of life. Consequently,it is necessary to increase educational and awareness activities for these factors.

Onkoloji hemşirelerinin profesyonel yaşam kalitesini ve travma sonrası gelişim düzeylerini etkileyen sosyodemografik ve mesleki faktörler

Öz:

Amaç: Onkoloji hemşirelerinin profesyonel yaşam kalitesi göstergeleri olan merhamet yorgunluğu, merhamet memnuniyeti, tükenmişlik; travma sonrası gelişim ve alt boyutları olan başkaları ile ilişkiler, yaşam felsefesinde değişim, benlik algısında değişim düzeylerinin ve bunları etkileyen etmenlerin belirlenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı olarak yapılan araştırmanın verileri, web tabanlı anketle; 01 Haziran 2013–31 Ocak 2014 tarihleri arasında toplanmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak hemşire tanıtım formu, “Profesyonel Yaşam Kalitesi Ölçeği (PYKÖ)”, “Travma Sonrası Gelişim Ölçeği (TSGÖ)” kullanılmıştır. Çalışmaya 182 hemşire katılmıştır. Bağımsız değişkenlerin ölçek ve alt ölçek puanları üzerine etkisi, bağımsız değişkenler için t-test ve tek yönlü ANOVA ile hesaplanmıştır. Bulgular: Yapılan istatistiksel değerlendirmede; hemşirelerin yaş, eğitim düzeyi, çocuk sayısı, onkolojiye yönelik eğitim alma, onkolojide çalışma süresi, aylık nöbet sayısı, haftalık çalışma saati, hemşireliği isteyerek seçme ve onkoloji hastası ile çalışmayı isteme durumlarının PYKÖ ve TSGÖ ile alt boyut puanlarını anlamlı düzeyde etkilediği saptanmıştır (p<0.05). Sonuç: Profesyonel yaşam kalitesini ve travma sonrası gelişimi, yaş, çocuk sayısı gibi sosyodemografik faktörler ile; hemşireliği isteyerek seçme, onkolojide çalışmayı isteme gibi mesleki faktörlerin etkilediği görülmüştür. Bu doğrultuda onkoloji hemşirelerinin çalışma ortamları hemşirelerin mesleki yaşam kalitelerini iyileştirecek şekilde düzenlenmelidir. Bununla birlikte eğitim ve farkındalık faaliyetlerinin bu doğrultuda arttırılması gereklidir.
